New mini-campus for the engineering departments at Qatar University, Doha. The design creates finger-like buildings housing six departments, each with a top-lit internal "street" forming a hive of department activity. Buildings and nodes have distinct entrances and identities to assist way-finding. Connecting all are a variety of common hubs, courtyards, and a larger scale "seed pod" of common facilities shared between departments.

Design for new residential and faculty buildings for the University of Al Nahrain, Baghdad. The design posits a central courtyard which acts as a focus for landscaping, entrances, circulation, shared cafes, and meeting rooms - the communal heart. The buildings adopt a common material palette but have radically different characters: teaching spaces project into and engage the courtyard; the residential wing is introverted with enigmatic screened bedroom bays (as traditional Baghdadi shanashils).

"The interaction between local neighbourhoods and educational activity is frequently neutral or even negative. In Tangier a dual problem exists of high levels of unemployment in highly educated sections of society combined with mass drop-out of population after primary school age. This project takes the model of 'the school of Athens' in treating education as an opportunity for communication and public space within the city. The educational activities within or surrounding the school are for all the local inhabitants rather than only for students and teachers. Schools interact with the neighbourhood where they are located, responding to the urban context of their location.

The project works at three scales:

Tangier scale - the neighbourhoods in Tangier are mostly distributed fragmentally. The neighbourhood education facility would be located in the centre of neighbourhoods to be easily accessed without crossing main roads. The neighbourhoods are re-framed by considering topography, area, distance, and the cutting effect of linear urban elements. Finding the initial ideal position through a series of calculations.

Neighbourhood scale - the projects seeks to develop neighbourhoods by enhancing the public role of education facilities within them. By identifying 'connection centres' closer links are created within different groups and city infrastructures. By formulating 'growth engines' the project creates strategies to encourage neighbourhood social and economic development in rapidly evolving sections of the city. By the creation of 'transformation catalysts' the project seeks to enhance less developed areas through educational activities.

Architectural scale - the basic structure of the school house could be abstracted into two pieces: the corridor and the classroom. The project dispatches these two parts and reinforces the public feature of the corridor aimed to create a common place for everyone in the neighbourhood." HZ

"As Morocco’s second most important industrial centre, Tangier has undergone recent rapid Industrialization and will see vast development in the near future. The growth of science based enterprise and education in Tangier meanwhile is very slow. The huge gap in-between leads to many social issues and hinders the region's long-term development.

The project proposes the introduction of science-based industry and education to the eastern part of the city. The project creates a large platform, strengthening co-operation between enterprise and research. The target of the project is to foster new types of business among highly educated people, and create new modes of enterprise to balance the 'dependant' economy (on foreign trade and services). The proposal is organised along a linear landscape campus to serve local people, functioning as an important spine for the sustainable urban development of the region." HL
